Communication for Front Line Management

  • Community Industry Group 26 Mortlock Avenue Port Kembla, NSW, 2505 Australia (map)

Join us for this 4-hour online workshop facilitated by Edward Birt.

This workshop is designed for managers and supervisors who are directly responsible for frontline operational or community-based teams. It is most relevant for those who:

• Manage teams of four to twelve direct reports who work across shifts, multiple sites, or community locations

• Oversee a mix of casual, part-time, and permanent employees with varying availability and entitlements

• Are responsible for conducting supervision, performance conversations, and team meetings as part of their role

• Work in sectors such as community services, disability support, aged care, health, emergency services, hospitality, retail, logistics, or any other operationally intensive environment

• Find it difficult to maintain consistent communication and supervisory contact with all team members due to the nature of frontline operations

• Are looking for practical, immediately applicable strategies rather than theoretical management frameworks

The course is equally relevant for experienced frontline managers seeking to refresh and systematise their approach, and for those who are newer to the complexity of managing large, dispersed frontline teams.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify the core communication, supervision, and performance management responsibilities of a frontline manager and explain why consistent execution of these responsibilities matters for team performance and wellbeing.

  • Design a minimum viable communication rhythm — a structured weekly and monthly schedule of supervisory contacts, team communications, and check-ins that is realistic given the demands of a frontline management role.

  • Apply the CONNECT framework to conduct effective, time-efficient one-to-one supervision conversations with individual team members, including those who are casual, shift-based, or infrequently available.

  • Select and use appropriate communication channels and methods for different types of messages to reach a mobile, shift-based team consistently and equitably.

  • Plan and facilitate an effective team meeting or briefing that works across a shift-based or dispersed team, including strategies for those who cannot attend in person.

  • Identify early indicators of performance concerns or wellbeing issues in individual team members and describe how to initiate a supportive, structured performance conversation.

  • Build a personal frontline management communication plan that consolidates their supervisory, performance, and team communication responsibilities into a practical, sustainable system.

Pricing: $100 for members and $150 for non-members.

Spaces are limited, so if you are unable to attend, please email Community Industry Group @ admin@cigroup.org.au or call us on (02) 4256 4333 as soon as possible. This training comes with a non-attendance guarantee of $50.00.
