Stepping Out in Cherry-Red Boots: Living with Dementia with David M Williams AM

What do a pair of cherry-red boots and a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease have in common? For David Morgan Williams AM, quite a lot, as it turns out.

In this episode of Community Matters, Nicky Sloan sits down with well-known Illawarra businessman and community advocate David Morgan Williams AM for an open, honest and often humorous conversation about living with dementia, challenging stigma, and continuing to make a difference.

David shares his experience of being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the support of his family, and his decision to speak publicly about his diagnosis rather than keep it hidden, “I can't hide this any longer. If I've got it, I'm going to do something with it”.

And then there's the wonderful story of his cherry-red boots! Once tucked away in a cupboard because he was embarrassed to wear them, those boots became a powerful metaphor for how we sometimes hide things about ourselves out of a misguided fear of what others might think.

Today, David is turning his personal experience into advocacy, contributing to Dementia Australia's advisory and research activities, speaking at events across the country and helping others living with dementia find connection, confidence and support.

Nicky and David also discuss the importance of early assessment, staying socially connected, recognising the contribution of carers, and creating communities where people living with dementia continue to feel valued and included.

This is an important conversation full of warmth, humour and hope, and a reminder that a dementia diagnosis doesn't define a person or diminish their ability to contribute to their community.

Sometimes making a difference starts with having the courage to step out in your cherry-red boots.
